The 7th generation Volkswagen Golf and Golf GTI were unveiled, in possibly one of THE coolest presentations, at the New York International Auto Show this week.
The base version of the new Golf 7 is coming with a 1.8 liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is producing a total output of 170 BHP (127 kW) and it has a peak torque of 250 Nm (184 lb-ft). The unit can be mated to either a manual or an automatic transmission. Engine options will also include the TDI Clean Diesel with the 2.0 liter common rail direct injection four-cylinder unit, producing 150 BHP (112 kW) and 320 Nm of torque (236 lb-ft), mated to a six-speed manual or a dual-clutch DSG transmission.
The new VW Golf 7 has moved to the Volkswagen MQB platform Volkswagen says, “The 2015 Golf ends the cycle whereby new versions of a car end up heavier than the models they replace.” That means a car that’s larger than the outgoing one — by about 2 inches in length and half an inch wide — but 51 pounds lighter. What that translates to is a car that will return 15 percent better fuel economy across its range.
Volkswagen has hinted about a release in the U.S. of the Golf GTD and from what we have heard, everything but a date has been released. Prices and fuel efficiency figures will be released by Volkswagen closer to the time the 2015 Golf and 2015 GTI go on sale, which is expected to be roughly in the spring of 2014.
Would you rather wait for the VW GTD or would a VW GTI be good enough?
