The IIHS announced earlier this year its top safety picks. The criteria: IIHS rates vehicles good, acceptable, marginal, or poor based on performance in a moderate overlap frontal crash, small overlap frontal crash, side impact and rollover, plus evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. To qualify for the 2013 TOP SAFETY PICK+ award, vehicles must earn good ratings for occupant protection in at least 4 of 5 evaluations and no less than acceptable in the fifth test. To qualify for the 2013 TOP SAFETY PICK award, vehicles must earn good ratings in the moderate overlap frontal test, side impact, rollover and rear tests, regardless of their rating in the small overlap frontal test.
Volkswagen has 8 cars that made the 2013 IIHS top safety pick list this year. VW tied for 4th place with Subaru, and fell only behind Ford with 9 cars, Honda with 12, and Toyota with 13.
