April 18th marks the opening of the 2014 New York Auto Show. Volkswagen has a couple of car models that will be making an appearance at the auto show, notably the VW Golf Sportwagen with all wheel drive. The Mark 7-based model sits 1.1 inches longer, .7 inches wider, and .9 inches lower than the current SportWagen, and is the same model as a wagon that Popular Mechanics tested in Europe nearly eight months ago.
The VW Golf Sportwagen will be the rename of the small wagon that has been with Volkswagen for years and it will finally get the 4-motion all wheel drive system found in other VW models. It will also be built on the new MQB platform. There is no definite release date or price point in the U.S. except “early 2015.” USA Today reports, “With 4Motion, the SportWagen becomes a direct rival to Subaru’s awd models. The TDI diesel accounts for a whopping 80% of U.S. Jetta SportWagen sales and gives small-wagon shoppers a relatively roomy and very fuel-efficient model.”
The Golf Sportwagen also made Business Insider’s “13 Cars we Can’t Wait To See a the New York Auto Show” list.
