Jetta Sportwagen

If it seems as if the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen looks more like a Golf than the new Jetta, your eyes aren’t deceiving you. That’s because Volkswagen’s two Jetta body styles only share basic components now; this year’s sedan has been fully redesigned to be larger and value-driven.

With its upscale cabin and sophisticated ride, the Sportwagen looks and feels like a German luxury car. And, of course, being a wagon, the Sportwagen can carry plenty of stuff. With about 67 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity, this Jetta is roomier than popular compact crossovers like the Chevy Equinox, Kia Sportage and VW’s own Tiguan. Since it sits lower to the ground and isn’t as heavy as the typical crossover, it’s also more responsive to drive and more fuel-efficient than those crossovers.

That fact is especially true given that the Sportwagen’s base 2.5-liter five-cylinder has been given a fuel economy boost for 2011 and now manages a respectable 27 mpg combined EPA estimate. Those in search of a true fuel sipper, though, can still check out the VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI, which is powered by a clean-burning turbodiesel engine. With its 34-mpg combined estimate, it’s one of the most fuel-efficient cars you can buy.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS
Here are the features and benefits of the Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen.

Panoramic sunroof
You can make the great outdoors the ultimate addition to your ride with the available panoramic power-sliding sunroof. You’ll have a gorgeous view of blue sky when you’re driving or riding inside the Jetta SportWagen. That’s right, the back seats get the view too.

Laser seam welding
Laser seam welding. Sure, it sounds cool. But what does it mean? Well, it’s kind of like the difference between a jacket with buttons and one with a zipper. The buttons keep the jacket on, but they still leave spaces in between. Whereas a zipper seals the deal, leaves no spaces, and therefore creates a much stronger bond.

When it comes to increased control, stability, and safety in every situation, thanks to laser seam welding, we’ve got the situation all zipped up.

Hot wax flooding
Before we put the sheet metal on your Jetta SportWagen, we put it through a treatment that we pioneered called hot wax flooding to fill any tiny spaces and remove moisture in the hardest to reach areas. The result of that process helps makes the frame so watertight that we’re able to offer a 12-year limited warranty against corrosion. We call that one of the best warranties in the business. You’ll probably call it peace of mind.

Roof rails
Bikes. Luggage. Skis. Christmas trees. The roof rails on your Jetta SportWagen work with all of our accessory racks. So whether you cycle, travel, ski or just need some extra storage space, these roof rails are ready to carry whatever you can dream up.

Exterior signal mirrors
In any relationship, communication is key. And the road is full of relationships between you and other drivers. Using the built-in turn signals on your side mirrors alerts everyone to your intended next move, which can help prevent collisions.

V-Tex leatherette seating
The Jetta SportWagen comes with the option of V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces for a more premium experience. They’re soft and instantly comfortable, in addition to being bolstered for extra support while cornering. Because when you drive a wagon, you deserve the sport too.

Multi-function steering wheel
Go ahead, grip the available multi-function steering wheel. Marvel at its soft leather wrapping and functional design. Doesn’t that feel nice? This steering wheel option comes with integrated controls for easy access to the entertainment system and to information such as average trip speed and miles to empty. It’s your connection to the road, your car, and so much more.

RNS 315 touchscreen navigation
The optional RNS 315 puts a five-inch color touchscreen stereo and navigation system right at your fingertips.¹ Not only does it come with a three-month trial subscription to Sirius® Satellite Radio,³ it’s also great at playing music you own. Whether it’s on your MP3 player or a CD, your favorites are just a click away. You can even get the MDI with iPod® cable that lets you easily navigate your playlists, albums, and songs all through the intuitive touchscreen interface.⁴ Because sometimes enjoying the ride is just as important as reaching your destination.

Rear wagon design
One day you’ve got friends along for the ride, the next day is carpool duty, and the weekend finds you running errands. Sometimes it’s all three in one day. So when it came to designing the Jetta SportWagen, we gave it a wagon design with rear seats that fold down in a 60/40 split to reconfigure to your needs. And that gives you 66.9 cubic feet of storage space. How much room is that? It’s a large screen TV, still in its box. It’s four flats of herbs and flowers, a huge bag of soil, that new hose you’ve been wanting, and all the tools you need to start a backyard garden. It’s two eager golden retrievers on their way to the park. And that’s what you get when you fold down the rear seats in every Jetta SportWagen. After all, it’s not just about getting as much as possible into your ride. It’s about getting the most out of it.

Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® cable
When you opt for the RNS 315 touchscreen navigation, it comes with the MDI with iPod® cable. Imagine navigating all of those playlists, songs, podcasts, and audio books using the intuitive touchscreen interface while your iPod recharges in the background.

6-speed DSG® transmission with Tiptronic®
Since the T in TDI® stands for turbocharged, we thought you’d appreciate the option of a six-speed DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic® on your Jetta SportWagen TDI Clean Diesel. That means you can push the gearshift into Tiptronic mode and enjoy the control of imperceptibly fast gear changes as you shift gears yourself. Or you can kick it into Sport mode and enjoy enhanced acceleration at the simple pump of the gas pedal. There’s nothing like having a little power to go with your performance.

Electromechanical steering system
The electromechanical steering system is one of the main reasons that Volkswagen cars have earned the reputation for sporty, dynamic steering. Compared to the more conventional hydraulic system, electromechanical steering is much more consistent and environmentally friendly because it doesn’t produce any waste or require any fluids that need to be replaced. It also reduces fuel consumption by only drawing energy from the engine during turning, meaning it essentially turns off while driving in a straight line. Sometimes the details make all the difference.

TDI® Clean Diesel engine
Go ahead, pass the next gas station. And the next. And even the next. Because the Jetta SportWagen TDI® Clean Diesel engine sips gas at the wallet-friendly rate of 42 highway mpg.¹ Yes, you read that right. That’s up to 609 miles on just one tank.² If that sounds impressive, prepare yourself for this: that T in TDI stands for turbocharged. And this engine delivers 140 hp and 236 lbs/ft of torque for exceptional power right from the start and plenty of oomph to keep you going. You can even add our DSG® automatic transmission with Tiptronic® to enjoy imperceptibly fast gear changes to go with that oomph.³ It’s a beautiful thing when a love of driving and a love for the environment coexist under one sculpted hood.

2.5L in-line 5-cylinder engine
Extra room for all your stuff requires an engine with some extra oomph. The Jetta SportWagen offers the choice of a powerful 2.5L, 170-hp, in-line 5-cylinder engine to ensure that you and your gear get everywhere you want to go. And it comes with the option of a six-speed automatic transmission, complete with Sport mode for a little extra kick, and Tiptronic® for those times when you want the thrill of shifting yourself.² So go ahead and play around. Your Jetta SportWagen won’t mind.

Independent suspension
A lot of suspensions are linked, so when your left wheel reacts to a pothole, your right wheel makes a similar motion. With independent suspension, all those little inconsistencies in the road will have less of an impact on you, your passengers, and the way your Jetta SportWagen handles. That’s engineering that focuses on the road, so you can focus on enjoying the drive.

Pinch protection on power windows
If there’s a set of unsuspecting fingers feeling the breeze when the windows are closing, we help protect every single digit by including pinch protection on all power windows. And all of the windows on the Jetta SportWagen have one-touch automatic up and down window controls.

Crash-optimized front end
Integrated right into the front structure of your Jetta SportWagen are impact-absorbing elements that allow for compression during a collision. That means the energy from the impact is absorbed by the car, which helps minimize the amount of energy that reaches you.

Anti-Slip Regulation (ASR)
ASR helps prevent the wheels on your Jetta SportWagen from spinning when you accelerate, by denying engine power in situations when it senses your wheels slipping. ASR works in conjunction with the Anti-lock Braking System to help maintain traction and control whenever you accelerate or brake, in almost all types of road conditions.

Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS)
After the airbags have been deployed in a collision, the Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) automatically unlocks all doors, turns off power to the fuel pump, and turns on the hazard lights.¹ That’s why we call it intelligent. Because it’s looking out for you when you need it most.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
You know when you have to swerve around something unexpectedly? Well, ESC helps prevent oversteering or understeering during an evasive maneuver by applying corrective forces to each of the wheels. And that helps you intuitively engage in proper counter-steering, thereby working with your VW to correct the problem. As for the thing that made you swerve, here’s to that happening only once in a blue moon.

Bluetooth Communication
Talk without taking your hands off the wheel… or your eyes off the road. Bluetooth® connectivity on the Jetta SportWagen helps you make, answer, and end calls from behind the wheel. Without Bluetooth, talking on your phone can be a dangerous distraction. Hands-free technology helps make driving safer for you and everyone else on the road. Just sync a compatible phone with built-in Bluetooth capabilities and start using use either voice controls or buttons on your steering wheel to control calls. After initial pairing, your phone should automatically connect when you start the engine.

Multiple mobile devices? Sync as many as four phones with your car.

Standard featureIt’s fun to jump in the car and get lost. Unless you actually get lost.

Navigation System

A built-in navigation system can help you avoid wrong turns and the frustrations that go with them. Whether you’re on your way to visit family, headed to the dentist, or looking for the closest shot of espresso, the Jetta SportWagen navigation system will help get you there. The system displays both 2D and 3D map perspectives, provides audio and on-screen directions, and saves all your favorite destinations to use over and over again.

An added bonus—the navigation display can show the road’s speed limit. It’s a simple way to help Jetta SportWagen drivers stay on the right side of the law.

Steering Wheel Controls
Change lanes and songs from the same place. Especially on longer drives, it’s tempting to multi-task. Whether you’re making or accepting a phone call or changing the song, you shouldn’t take your attention away from the road. With controls built right into the steering wheel, the Jetta SportWagen will let you interact with your phone and music more quickly and safely. You can even manage the multi-function display on the dashboard. Look at the compass so you know you’re going the right way and check out fuel consumption.
