Mark Twain famously wrote, “There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics.” Judged on statistics and track numbers alone, the Volkswagen GTI would be one of the least desirable of the currently available sport hatchbacks. But that’s a lie. In reality, the GTI is a front runner among the competition.

Sure, the Volkswagen GTI isn’t as quick to reach 60 mph as the competition, nor can it weave through the slalom or cling to a skid pad as tenaciously. How then, you ask, can the GTI rank so highly in such a sport-oriented segment? The answer is two-fold: refinement and drivability.

The VW GTI’s interior is quite simply, the best in its class. It’s so nice, in fact, that it could be mistaken for a cabin from sister company Audi, save for the plaid fabric seats. (About those private school uniform-patterned coverings — it’s a nod to the original GTI from more than three decades ago.) The GTI also boasts surprising amounts of rear legroom and useful cargo space considering its compact overall size.

Drivability is the other main advantage the Volkswagen GTI has over other sport hatches. Output from the 2.0-liter turbo engine is smooth and linear, and that power is more manageable in the real world than that of more feisty rivals. Competitors like the Mazdaspeed 3 and Mini Cooper S suffer from torque steer — the sensation of the steering wheel tugging in your hands under hard acceleration — that many drivers find distracting.

Certainly, there’s a lot to like about all of the GTI’s competitors. But if you’re like Mark Twain and don’t blindly go by the numbers, you’ll find the GTI an ideal pick — the sum of its parts can’t be quantified with statistics alone.

Hatchback design

One of the biggest benefits of having a hatchback is the versatility. When the first GTI was built, it was given the “hot hatch” nickname and has lived up to that moniker ever since. On the outside it has a compact, sporty design. But when you open the hatch and fold the rear seat flat, the hot hatch transforms into a hot cargo mover

Our world-renowned logo is perfect just the way it is. (At least we think so.) But that doesn’t mean it can’t work even harder. So instead of just being the badge on the back of the GTI, now it serves double duty as the handle to open the hatch. So don’t worry, that classic hatch still opens wide to fit loads of stuff. It just looks a lot smarter while doing it.

Laser seam welding. Sure, it sounds cool. But what does it mean? Well, it’s kind of like the difference between a jacket with buttons and one with a zipper. The buttons keep the jacket on, but they still leave spaces in between. Whereas a zipper seals the deal, leaves no spaces, and therefore creates a much stronger bond. When it comes to increased control, stability, and safety in every situation, thanks to laser seam welding, we’ve got the situation all zipped up.


Keyless access with push-button start
The days of locking your keys in the car are over thanks to the optional keyless access with push-button start feature. With your keys in your pocket or purse, your doors will automatically unlock when you pull the driver’s door handle. Then, once you’re inside, a simple press of the start button turns the ignition on so you can drive off on your next adventure.


Multi-function steering wheel
Go ahead, grip the GTI-badged steering wheel. Marvel at its soft leather wrapping and flat-bottomed, race car design. Doesn’t that feel nice? This sporty, multi-function steering wheel option comes with integrated controls for easy access to the entertainment system and to information such as average trip speed and miles to empty. It’s your connection to the road, your car, and so much more.


Premium VIII touchscreen stereo
On the optional touchscreen stereo, you’ve got an in-dash 6-CD changer, an AM/FM radio, an SD memory card reader, eight premium speakers, and a 3-month trial to SIRIUS® Satellite Radio.² Did we mention that the CD changer can also play MP3 and WMA CDs with hundreds of songs on one disc? Plus, you can easily navigate all of that music, entertainment and more using the intuitive touchscreen interface sitting right in the dash of your GTI.

The Interlagos plaid seats have been an iconic part of the GTI since the beginning. Not only do they look great, but they’re fully adjustable and bolstered to help keep you snug in your seat while cornering.


Bluetooth® connectivity
You can do more than just make and take hands-free phone calls with the optional Bluetooth®¹ with voice command, phonebook download, and music streaming capabilities. Enjoy the convenience of simply speaking a command to your phone and standing by as it makes the call for you. Or stream music in full stereo sound through the Bluetooth connection and the speaker system on your GTI. Or if your tastes tend toward fewer bells and whistles, opt for the Bluetooth hands-free calling system that just lets you make wireless calls. Because sometimes the simple solution is all you need.


Launch control
Similar to a two-step or line-lock feature used in drag racing, launch control is a neat trick to show off what your GTI can do.¹ Simply put the DSG® transmission in Sport mode, turn off the Electronic Stability Control, keep your left foot on the brake, and then press the gas pedal to the floor. The engine will hold steady at 3,800 rpm to build boost, and once you take your foot off the brake, it’s go time. Just remember to turn the ESC back on once you blast off. Yes, our legal department made us say that.


Sport suspension
The GTI comes standard with track-tuned sport suspension, giving it a more aggressive stance to help it handle better and corner tighter. You’ve probably heard the phrase, “it corners like it’s on rails.” Yeah, it’s basically like that.


2.0L TSI® engine
The award-winning 2.0L TSI® engine is tuned to have a broad, flat torque curve with a nice, wide power band. If you’re not sure what that means, step on the gas when the light turns green. That’ll tell you all you need to know.


DSG®
The DSG® transmission on the GTI comes with super-sleek paddle shifters that transfer power between two mechanically actuated clutches and row through its sequential gear set, seamless acceleration and imperceptibly fast gear changes. That’s kind of a mouthful, but you’ll love every minute of it. And because there is no loss of rpm during gear changes, the DSG uses as much as 20% less fuel than conventional automatics and 10% less than conventional manual models in tests under everyday conditions.


Bi-Xenon™ headlights with AFS
Brighter than halogen or regular filament bulbs, the optional Bi-Xenon™ light is created by an arc of electricity inside the bulb that’s filled with xenon gas.¹ It’s so effective that both the low and the high beams can use the same bulb. The Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS) comes standard with the Bi-Xenon™ headlights and actually turns the headlight up to 15 degrees around corners, helping you to effectively see into the future.


ABS with HBA
ABS actually serves two purposes when it comes to safety. Not only does it help keep the brakes from locking up, but it also helps you retain control over the steering during sudden stops. So you can still maneuver the car as you attempt to avoid whatever is in your way. Hydraulic Brake Assist, or HBA, works together with ABS to ensure that you get the maximum braking power from the brake system even if you don’t press the brakes completely. How? It accounts for the suddenness of the braking, and applies extra pressure when you need it most.


Intelligent Crash Response System
After the airbags have been deployed in a collision, the Intelligent Crash Response System (ICRS) automatically unlocks all doors,  turns off power to the fuel pump, and turns on the hazard lights.¹ That’s why we call it intelligent. Because it’s looking out for you when you need it most.


Six airbags with Side Curtain Protection®
Nobody wants to think about what happens in the event of an accident. Except for our safety engineers. They made sure that the GTI has six airbags standing guard to help keep you safe. In the event of a collision, your GTI deploys the necessary airbags to help cushion you and any other occupants of the vehicle and help absorb the energy and forces from the impact. So if you have a front-end collision, the front airbags may deploy. For a side impact, the side airbags and Side Curtain Protection® may deploy. All depending on the severity of the impact. And all of that adds up to smarter, safer protection for you.


Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
You know when you have to swerve around something unexpectedly? Well, ESC helps prevent oversteering or understeering during an evasive maneuver by applying corrective forces to each of the wheels. And that helps you intuitively engage in proper counter-steering, thereby working with your VW to correct the problem. As for the thing that made you swerve, here’s to that happening only once in a blue moon.


Navigation System
It’s fun to jump in the car and get lost. Unless you actually get lost.

A built-in navigation system can help you avoid wrong turns and the frustrations that go with them. Whether you’re on your way to visit family, headed to the dentist, or looking for the closest shot of espresso, the GTI navigation system will help get you there.

The system displays both 2D and 3D map perspectives, provides audio and on-screen directions, and saves all your favorite destinations to use over and over again.

An added bonus—the navigation display can show the road’s speed limit. It’s a simple way to help GTI drivers stay on the right side of the law.

Steering Wheel Controls
Change lanes and songs from the same place.

Especially on longer drives, it’s tempting to multi-task. Whether you’re making or accepting a phone call or changing the song, you shouldn’t take your attention away from the road.
