Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported 37,525 units sold in April, a 31.5 percent increase over prior year sales, 38 percent increase year-to-date and the best April since 1971.

“The demand and enthusiasm for our products continues at a strong pace and we are beginning to see the fruits of our investments pay off, marking the best April in over forty years,” said Jonathan Browning, President and CEO, Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “As our sales continue to outpace the industry, we are investing in our infrastructure to ensure sustained growth.”

Last month, the company announced expansion plans for VW Credit Inc. (VCI) facility in Libertyville, IL. The ground breaking took place on April 20 for a 30,000-square-foot expansion of the facility. The multimillion-dollar expansion, to be completed early next year, will accommodate approximately 150 new jobs that VW Credit, Inc. expects to create through 2018. This comes on top of the additional 1,000 jobs that the company announced it would add at its manufacturing plant in Chattanooga, TN to meet growing demand of the 2012 Passat.

Jetta sedan, including the enthusiast GLI model, remains the volume leader for Volkswagen with sales totaling 13,754, while Jetta SportWagen totaled 1,904. Sales of the Chattanooga-built Passat continue to rise with record sales of 10,096 units in April, the second month breaking 10,000 units.

The 2012 Beetle, recently named to Ward’s list of “10 Best Interiors,” sold 2,065 units. The Beetle TDI Clean Diesel Coupe will go on sale late summer 2012. The Tiguan continued to see strong sales with 2,333 units sold and the Golf saw a 14.6 percent increase in sales with a total of 3,876 units sold.

2013 VW CC First Drive – VW Southtowne Utah

The Volkswagen CC, introduced four years ago and refreshed for 2013, lives in that rarefied part of the market that we might call “Niche vehicles that don’t make sense to a lot of people.” Of course, niche vehicles by definition don’t have to make sense to a lot of people, though they do need to make sense to a few (quite a few, if we’re talking VW).

Fortunately, having recently participated in the launch of the new CC, we are among those few to whom the CC seems like a good idea, well executed.
By way of explanation, the CC recipe mixes four-door sedan practicality together with a sleek European design, reasonable fuel economy, all at an affordable price. That’s a lot of desirable stuff and would seem to be the basis for widespread popularity. If you think of the CC as a Camry or Accord for the design-conscious set, you can start to see how VW’s product planners were thinking.
We think the CC succeeds admirably at this mission. Upon approach the CC looks good, in a classical way. It isn’t quite voluptuous, but it is clearly designed with care rather than appearing to be the byproduct of a cost-engineering exercise. On the inside this feeling repeats itself, especially in the available Euro color combinations. The metalwork is clean, with attractive fit, and the materials are good. As is common on so-called four-door coupes, the rear headroom won’t work for passengers above six feet in height, but otherwise the seating is quite comfortable in the firm Germanic oeuvre.
On the road the CC’s driving dynamics are much less flaccid and wooly than either of its market-share-leading competitors. The suspension feels taut, with good anti-roll characteristics and pretty high damping levels for a luxury car. (And we do see the CC at least straddling the line between mainstream vehicles and luxury vehicles, based mostly on content and execution versus price.) Steering is precise and controllable, though not very communicative. This latter element, while a weakness for enthusiasts, may fit well with the desires of the target market.
The four-cylinder turbo is more than adequate for the CC. We like the handling with this engine, and a turbo torque curve fits well with real-world luxury car driving. A V-6 is available, but we would only look at that motor if we had to have the available 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. Otherwise, the 2.0T saves both money and fuel, and is entertaining to drive.
If there is a fly in the ointment, it is in the CC’s ride quality. As veteran sports car drivers, we were quite happy blasting across California’s modestly pockmarked rural roads. But the true connoisseur of luxury might find the CC’s suspension to be slightly brittle as the going gets rough. The CC communicates sharp bumps and pavement edges with slightly too much bite to be confused with a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz product.
But we don’t think that is the source of whatever discontent we’ve heard about the CC. The issue non-buyers have seems to come from two areas. First, there is some cognitive dissonance around the idea of a luxury car that wears the VW badge, especially one that communicates the idea of luxury via design. However, we know plenty of folks who want the design and driving goods but not the triumphalism of an upmarket badge. We think VW has built a car that fits this latter market well.
The other source of confusion comes with the CC’s price. At a base of $30,610 the CC appears rather expensive to those who aren’t actually in the market. But for those who are, this is about the average price of a vehicle sold in the US, and is certainly less than a BMW, or Mercedes, or even an Audi will typically sell for, though not always by a lot. Some will say, “For close to BMW, or M-B, or Audi money, the VW doesn’t have the BMW, or M-B, or Audi badge!” To which, noting the argument above, we say, “Exactly.”
We think the CC is a nice design, with good driving characteristics and a reasonable value proposition. We wish we could say that about more mid-size sedans.

The Volkswagen Up! beat out the BMW 3 Series and the Porsche 911 for World Car of the Year.

New York - Volkswagen’s effort to set a new global standard for a small car design was recognized by the world’s leading automotive media in New York, as a jury of 64 journalists selected the VW Up! as the 2012 World Car of the Year.

The Volkswagen Up! was chosen from an initial entry list of 34 new vehicles from all over the world, then a short list of 10, then three finalists: the Volkswagen Up !, the BMW 3 Series and the Porsche 911.

“This award shows once again that in the Up! our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” said Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

The World Car Awards jurors commented: “The little Volkswagen Up! has altered what we have come to expect from the city car segment. Of note are the responsive steering, sophisticated suspension setup, new efficient engines and the quality of materials and finish. Never before in this economy segment have owners felt so premium. Look for every builder of city cars to up its game just to compete with the new VW.”

To be eligible for the overall World Car award, the candidates must become available for sale on at least two continents during the period beginning January 1, 2011 and ending May 30, 2012.

As well as VW, Porsche took an award home for the new generation 911, which was voted 2012 World Performance Car. The Porsche 911 was chosen from an initial entry list of 19 new cars from all over the world, then a short list of ten, then three finalists: the Porsche 911, the Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4, and the McLaren MP4-12C.

Detlev von Platen, president and CEO of Porsche Cars North America, said: “The new 911 is more powerful, delivers extraordinary driving dynamics, is more fuel efficient than ever, and is still a pure Porsche. Winning the 2012 World Performance Car is excellent validation from a global team of world-class journalists for the work and dedication of everyone at Porsche.”

The World Car jurors observed that, “The World Car Awards have had a Porsche in the final three for World Performance Car in all but one of the years we’ve been in existence. The all-new Porsche 911 Carrera and Carrera S have impressed our expert jury with leaps in innovation and risk-taking design choices while at the same time maintaining and improving upon the driving thrills we look for in any Porsche two-door.”

The 2012 World Car Design of the Year went to the Range Rover Evoque. Gerry McGovern, Land Rover Design Director and Chief Creative Officer, who led the design team said: “This prestigious accolade recognizes the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received to the Evoque’s bold, dramatic design. It is a car that truly resonates on an emotional level.”

The World Car Design of the Year category, and the corresponding award, is meant to highlight new vehicles with innovation and style that push established boundaries. The Evoque competed with 46 other candidates.

The fourth award for the 2012 World Green Car went to the Mercedes-Benz S 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY. The Mercedes was chosen from an initial entry list of 23 rivals, including the Ford Focus Electric and Peugeot 3008 Hybrid. Mercedes’ Thomas Weber, Board of Management, responsible for Group Research and Development, said: “The highly efficient gasoline and diesel engines in the S-Class show that our customers can drive a luxury vehicle with a clear conscience. The S250 CDI is the most impressive example: with a fuel consumption of only 5,7 l per 100 km, the S250 CDI is the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in the world.”

In the automotive realm, efficiency comes in a variety of flavors. And Volkswagen is betting on nearly all of them in both the near- and long-term.

It’s diesel offerings are some of the marque’s best sellers, particularly the Jetta TDI Sportwagen which blends high capacity and higher fuel economy with a dash of driver engagement. VW is taking it to the next level with the re-introduction of the New (New) Beetle TDI, an oil-burning version of its recently redone retro coupe that hits 39 mpg on the freeway without breaking a sweat.

On the other end of the spectrum is VW’s hottest hatch, the Golf R, packing 256 turbocharged ponies and all-wheel-drive into a commuter-friendly package that makes its upmarket sibling from Audi (the A3) look downright plebeian by comparison.

And then there’s the Golf Blue E-motion, an all-electric version of V-Dub’s popular compact that’s undergoing testing in both Germany and U.S., but isn’t slated to go on sale to consumers for at least another two years.

We had the chance to sample each of the automaker’s latest wares in the mountain roads east of Santa Cruz, CA and discovered that VW is serving up efficiency in a trio of dishes sure to appeal to fuel- and fashion-conscious urbanites, performance junkies and early EV adopters – but not all at once.

2013 Volkswagen Beetle TDI (Price: TBA)

For 2012, Volkswagen finally updated its achingly archaic Beetle with new sheetmetal, a reworked interior and a presence that’s less feminine and more butch – if barely. We like it.

One hundred and forty horsepower might not sound like much coming from a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, but when it comes to diesels, we’re talking torque – 236 pound-feet of the stuff. That generous helping of twist comes on low in the rev range, providing an effortless wave of thrust before the oil-burning four-pot begins running out of steam when exercising the right side of the tach (redline comes in at a paltry 5,000 rpm). But snag the next gear in the TDI’s standard six-speed transmission (an even more efficient 6-speed dual clutch automatic is available as an option) and you’re right back in the diesel’s sweet spot, and hitting 29/39 mpg in the process. It’s still a gutless wonder, but with those kind of fuel economy ratings and an interior that’s a pleasant place to while away the commute, you could do – and look – far worse.

2012 Volkswagen Golf R (Price: $33,900)

When does a Golf stop being an appliance and start becoming a seriously sporting hatch? When VW turns up the wick on its tried-and-true turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to output 256 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque – and puts all that grunt through all four wheels.

The Golf R isn’t the Mitsubishi Evolution X/Subaru WRX STI-killer you might think (3,325 pounds and undefeatable traction control does that), but what it lacks in rally-bred brutality it makes up for with a quiet cabin, upmarket interior materials and a level of comfort normally reserved for its Golf-based brethren at Audi. But refinement comes at a price, and in the case of the Golf R, the manual-only hatch commands a hefty premium compared to other solid performers in the segment. Still, a 0-60 mph run of 5.6 seconds and the sure-footedness of its 4Motion all-wheel-drive system makes it a daily driving hoot, even if its performance pales to similarly specced Japanese track stars.

2014 Volkswagen E-Golf (Price: TBA)

The E-Golf is Volkswagen’s opening salvo into the world of electric vehicles, with 114 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque provided by an electric motor powering the front wheels and juice supplied by a lithium-ion battery pack good for 26.5 kWh. Range comes in at 93 miles – just shy of the Nissan LEAF’s theoretical 100-mile stint – but unlike the LEAF, you can’t buy it. At least, not yet.

A fleet of 20 E-Golfs are being delivered to Volkswagen employees in Detroit, San Francisco and Washington D.C. for testing over the course of the next year, providing VW engineers with feedback on everything from its 220-volt home charging stations to the accompanying iPhone app that keeps tabs on charge status and interior temperatures.

Our stint behind the wheel was nearly cut short by a lack of juice, but first impressions are favorable, even if the range anxiety monkey loomed ominously on our back.

Forward momentum is on the slow side of tolerable and the additional 450 pounds of weight added by the front-mounted electric motor and accompanying battery pack dampens acceleration while providing a buttoned-down sensation normally absent from the Golf range.

If it feels like a rolling beta test, that’s because it is. But like other full-fledged products from VW, the attention to detail and general polish of the E-Golf speaks volumes about how seriously the crew from Wolfsburg is taking its first EV efforts. Save the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that allow the driver to set brake regeneration to 3 different levels of retardation, it drives just like a standard Golf, which in the world of EVs is a feat unto itself. Look for the production version to hit dealers in the U.S. late next year or in early 2014, although be prepared to pay a premium for hopping on the EV bandwagon a bit early.

Is the Scirocco Coming To US? – VW Southtowne Utah

It was a buzz that went around the internet for a couple of days and created some excitement among enthusiasts, but it was quickly squashed.

Word leaked late last week via an official-looking dealer communiqué that Volkswagen had finally decided to pass on bringing the Scirocco to the U.S., but to the best of our knowledge, nobody has gotten first-hand confirmation that the sporty hatchback will not make it across The Pond – until now.

We just got off the phone with Tom Wegehaupt, Volkswagen’ of America’s public relations coordinator, and he has given us an on-the-record confirmation that the car will not be coming to the U.S. Apparently, the business case just couldn’t be made for the car, what with fears of the model cannibalizing sales of the forthcoming GTI and the health of the auto market.

We imagine that other factors were at work too, including the sour economy at large, America’s historic aversion to hatchbacks, the short shelf-life of most sports-car models, and so on. Either way, if you want a sporting hatch from Wolfsburg, it looks like you’re going to have to slake your performance joneses with something badged G-T-I.

No the Scirocco is not coming, but the newly redesigned Golf and GTI are coming. These hot hatches are sure to keep enthusiasts happy here, but we are sure the Scirocco would have made them more happy.

Here are a few new tidbits that have occurred recently with VW.

The Volkswagen Up!
was declared the 2012 World Car of the Year today at the New York International Auto Show. The award marks the third time Volkswagen has won the World Car of the Year award. VW previously earned the title in 2009 with the Golf VI and in 2010 with its Polo model. The Up! beat of 33 other new vehicles from throughout the world, including the BMW 3 Series and the Porsche 911, which rounded out the top three. Last year’s winner of the World Car of the Year, the 2011 Nissan Leaf, failed to crack the top ten in 2012.

“This award shows once again that in the Up! our designers and engineers have created a vehicle that has been thought through in minute detail. A vehicle that sets standards in its class for efficient use of space, safety, motoring fun and environmental compatibility,” said Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chariman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG.

So what earned the Volkswagen Up! such high praise? The World Car Awards jurors remarked that, “The little Volkswagen Up! has altered what we have come to expect from the citycar segment. Of note are the responsive steering, sophisticated suspension setup, new efficient engines and the quality of materials and finish. Never before in this economy segment have owners felt so premium. Look for every builder of citycars to up its game just to compete with the new VW”.

VW Passat Alltrack debuts at New York Autoshow.
Volkswagen’s luxury brand, Audi, has a history of building off-road-ready wagons with its Allroad line; VW follows suit with the debut of the Alltrack concept. The car is based on the Passat Alltrack sold in Europe, but Volkswagen says the concept is only meant to gauge reaction and not intended for the U.S. Despite plastic cladding around the wheel openings and revised bumper styling, the Alltrack remains more wagon than crossover in appearance. To improve the car’s off-road potential, Volkswagen has increased its ground clearance by 1.2 inches, added steel skidplates to protect the underbelly and fitted the car with an off-road-driving program for the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system.

Volkswagen will add 800 new jobs at its Tennessee plant to boost production of the popular Passat sedan. The jobs will increase the plant’s work force to more than 3,500 by the end of the year, the German company said Thursday. The additional workers will be used to bolster the existing two shifts at the plant, and expand production to Saturday.

“We’re adding a third team at this plant for a simple reason: Customers want to buy Passats,” said Jonathan Browning, the president and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America.

The plant will operate 120 hours per week with the new workers, up 40 hours from current levels, he said. Browning said the extra work force will help the plant ramp up and be able to produce 170,000 vehicles next year, most of which are destined for the U.S. market. Others are exported to Canada, Mexico and South Korea, he said.

Volkswagen sold nearly 23,000 Passats in the U.S. last year, an 83 percent increase over 2010. Sales have been stronger so far this year. Through February, sales of the redesigned sedan topped 14,500, according to Autodata Corp. Browning said March sales are on pace for 10,000. VW built its first Passat at the plant last April. It now rolls out 35 cars an hour at the plant, which surpassed 50,000 vehicles in February.

VW eGolf First Drive – VW Southtowne Utah

We always try and bring you the newest and best information on all VW news and this one is quite exciting. Take a look at the article from CNET below.

(Credit: Wayne Cunningham/CNET)

During a day spent torture-testing Volkswagen performance models in the Santa Cruz mountains, I took a time out to drive the eGolf, the electrical vehicle based on the Golf hatchback. Volkswagen just kicked off a test program in the U.S. with 20 eGolfs spread around the country.

I got a look at the eGolf last month in Volkswagen’s Electronics Research Laboratory (ERL). The car uses a 26.5 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack to give it an estimated 93 miles in range.

The eGolf felt lighter than both the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt.

The cabin of the eGolf I drove resembled the standard Golf’s in many ways, not surprising as these cars share everything except the driveline. But the instrument cluster swaps a power use gauge for the tachometer, and a smaller analog gauge shows the remaining range. That all-important number is repeated on a digital display.

Like other electric cars, the eGolf glided quietly forward. As the range display only showed 10 miles, I kept a light foot on the accelerator, so did not feel the full effect of its 199 pound-feet of torque driving the front wheels.

Mark Gillies, Volkswagen’s product and technology mManager, rode in the passenger seat, advising me on the eGolf’s unique brake regeneration capabilities. On a downhill slope, I moved the shifter to the B position, which slowed the car substantially. It also delivers about 60 kilowatts of regeneration, according to Gillies.

Putting it back into drive and coming upon another down slope, Gillies advised me to hit the paddle shifter inscribed with a minus sign. Regeneration drag began to slow the wheels a bit, and a small, empty battery icon appeared on the instrument cluster.

Volkswagen installed electric vehicle chargers at its Electronics Research Laboratory.

Tapping the paddle shifter again produced more drag and a low level marker in the battery icon. I was able to tap the paddle two more times, bringing the regeneration level to maximum and filling up the battery icon. Likewise, hitting the plus paddle lifted each level of regeneration. It was a fine degree of control to give electric car drivers.

More surprising was how light the car felt. Volkswagen has not released the eGolf’s curb weight, but I did not register the same kind of low-placed weight as in the Nissan Leaf or Chevrolet Volt. Instead, the car drove like it was similar in weight to the standard Golf.

Some of that perception may have had to do with the electric power steering, which was heavily boosted. Turning the wheel to very little effort.

As to that 10-mile range number, I would have thought Gillies would be more concerned, as it was a 17-mile drive to the ERL where the car was based, and where it could be recharged. But he blithely pointed out how more than half of that run was downhill. The car would probably end up with more range than when he started.

And that point made me realize the fungible nature of range in an electric car. Going downhill in a gas-engined car may make the trip computer’s range go up, but you are still depleting the gasoline to some degree. The regeneration capabilities of electric cars mean you can restore much of the used energy, given the right topography.

Because of currently limited range, electric car drivers out of necessity will develop an understanding of their local topography superior to that of other drivers. These drivers will find the gentler grades for hill climbing and the best down slopes for regeneration. Whatever range the car indicates may not matter depending on the down or up slopes ahead.

Volkswagen has just begun testing the eGolf. The lessons learned from this program will go into the production model, planned for the end of 2014.

VW Southtowne will bring you more information on the eGolf as it comes to us… for now we have many other versions of the VW Golf that are present and will be sure to please until the new model comes.

There is the VW Golf TDI, VW GTI, and the whole line of regular VW Golf’s that come in many different.

The 2012 VW Jetta is one of VW’s top models for a reason. It is one of the most inexpensive sedans in the marketplace, has an incredible list of features and benefits, has fantastic handling, is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, gets outstanding MPG in ever model especially the TDI, holds it’s value better than most sedan’s in it’s class, and much more. All in all the VW Jetta is just an amazing value dollar for dollar. Here is a breakdown on models, awards, customer reviews, Industry Expert reviews, and more that you may not have known about the VW Jetta.

“Bought a new Jetta last month and we couldn’t be happier. It’s the perfect car for a family with young drivers – has a youthful feel, but doesn’t look or feel gimmicky for the parents to drive. We looked at the Hyundai, Honda and Suburu, but this car is very safe, solid and fun to drive. The styling is classic which appeals to everyone in the family. It handles very well. The acceleration requires getting used to as the engine shifts to higher gears too soon (engine lugging), but the tiptronic gives you an option if you really want more pep.”

“This car is a dream to drive, I know the base model Jettas are not well liked but the 2012 GLI is in a class by itself. I get alot of compliments on the car whenever I am filling up on gas. Most people mistake the car for a high end bmw. The car is quiet and on the highway I am averaging about 35mpg, city approx 23-25. Could not be happier, also I just found out now this car is in high demand and they are sold before they hit the lot.”

“I bought my manual Sportawagen TDI in June. I’ve been VW guy for 10 years now and own Jetta Wagon for 10 years before and drove it for almost 200K without any major problems. New TDI gave me some trouble at the beginning. I stole car few times. But I think it is more my fault than car ( I use to drive gasoline car for too long). This one is different because of “drive by wire” and diesel at the same time. When engine is working at idle for some time and then you try to “step on gas” – it does not pick up right away and rather stall. Once I made adjustments to my driving habits – it is working fine. My fuel consumption is around 40 MPG or greater which is a wonderful with today?s prices. Another plus is power at lower rpm and great acceleration. You can feel when turbine is picking up… I hope that this car will serve me for another 10 years and 200K. I would recommend this car to everyone who is enjoying manual.”

The next coming Jetta Model to be released will be the 2013 Jetta Hybrid. Here is a bit of information on that upcoming model.
2013 VW Jetta Hybrid
The all-new Jetta Hybrid is powered by a high-tech turbocharged gasoline engine that is paired with a zero-emissions electric motor. While this marriage of smart and sensible enables impressive driving performance with a class-leading 0-60 mph time of less than 9.0 seconds, this new Jetta is also the world’s first hybrid to use a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. What does that mean to you? It means the Jetta can deliver an estimated combined fuel economy figure of 45 mpg with no sacrifice in power. The fuel efficiency is a full 20 percent higher, and in city traffic, it climbs to a little over 30 percent. The Jetta Hybrid can also be driven in pure electric mode at speeds of up to 44 mph and for up to 1.2 miles, depending on operating conditions. And for the first time in the U.S. market, we’re using our acclaimed 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline power plant, which weighs in at a mere 216 pounds. The slimmed-down four-cylinder engine produces 150 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque from just 1400 rpm. Now you can have a lead foot and still be environmentally friendly.
What’s Cool The Jetta has always had a certain cool factor, but the Jetta Hybrid turns it up a few notches. It features a new take on regenerative braking: its clutch decouples the gasoline engine from the drivetrain when in pure electric drive or coasting modes to release more kinetic energy back into the battery. Because “decouples” is such a cool word, we’ll use it to describe another feature: when you step off the accelerator pedal at speeds of up to 84 mph, the TSI® engine shuts down and decouples from the drivetrain to eliminate driveline drag and the effects of the engine’s torque, resulting in even greater fuel efficiency. Want info on how fuel-efficient the Jetta Hybrid is? Get it with one glance at its all-new ePower meter. It also boasts a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery, and its Autobahn-proven technology makes it the fastest compact hybrid in its class. Now that’s cool.

Why It Matters

Think Blue is Volkswagen’s commitment to achieving sustainable mobility through technology and cars that don’t compromise performance. With its impressive fuel efficiency, turbocharged speed, innovative technology and standard safety equipment like Electronic Stability Control, anti-lock brakes and six airbags, the Jetta Hybrid embodies the Think Blue spirit of mobility that’s not only environmentally friendly, but fun.

We always like to keep you updated on Upcoming Models as well as Concept Vehicles from VW. Here is an article of the Volkswagen XL1 caught testing from AUTOBLOG. A concept that was said to be going into limited production…

Just over one year ago, we heard reports suggesting that Volkswagen would actually be building a production version of its Formula XL1 concept for limited consumption. And while the skeptics among us were quick to dismiss these reports with a resounding “yeah, right,” this latest set of spy shots show that Volkswagen is indeed making progress on an honest-to-goodness road-going model of its 1.0-liter fuel economy warrior.

It’s still unclear exactly what will power the production XL1, though the concept car featured a two-cylinder TDI diesel paired with an electric motor, lithium-ion battery pack and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. All in, this is said to be good for an astonishing 235 miles per gallon. It might look big and sleek, but the XL1 is about as long and wide as a Volkswagen Polo. It should be ultra-light, too – the concept version tipped the scales at just 1,753 pounds.

The XL1 might look sleek and sporty, but performance will be anything but. The latest report from our spy shooter’s sources state that the production car will be limited to a top speed of about 75 miles per hour, and that it’ll take 32(!) seconds to shoot from a standstill to 50 mph, even though earlier reports have suggested a 0-62 time of as little as 11.9 seconds.

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for future XL1 prototypes as development continues, but for now, scroll through our attached high-res image gallery to see the space-age VW for yourself.

Click the link for more photos of of the XL1 in action from AUTBLOG

We will always try to keep you informed of all VW news and this was one that we thought was kind of exciting. I would’nt take the Spy Shooters info on the top speed or the 0-60 times as they are just barely starting to test the car. So I am sure with adjustments the vehicle will live up to the specs we have seen before from VW.

2013 VW CC Now Available At VW Southtowne

The 2013 Volkswagen CC is here at VW Southtowne. As you can see from the photo above the 2013 Volkswagen CC four-door sedan flaunts a new front as well as rear end that better aligns its styling with the rest of the Volkswagen model range. Bi-xenon headlamps, with LED daytime running lamps, are now standard on the nose as are LED lamps on the tail. To complete the transformation, there are also new 17- and 18-inch wheels.

The very welcomed news is that the CC is now able to accommodate five passengers (or four plus a child seat) thanks to a flat cushion and an extra set of belts between the rear seats. The five-passenger cabin is optional, but we expect it to be popular.

The standard powertrain is a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder rated at 200 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed dual-clutch. Front-wheel drive is the sole choice with the four-cylinder model. The optional engine is a 3.6-liter six-cylinder, rated at 280 horsepower. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, but Volkswagen’s 4motion all-wheel drive is optional with the V6.

We just received our first shipment of the new 2013 VW CC, so come down and take a look at just how beautiful the new design is.
